about

Before Silvergirl was Silvergirl, there was just me, Steve O'Connell. In many ways this is still true. I'm the guy behind Silvergirl and this EP, reflects that time. Before my project had a name. Before I played with the band. Before the Earthquake Dreams record.

This is The Gray Light. Six songs selected from a collection of 8-track recordings I was making in my apartment in Chicago, circa 2008.

As I begin to demo new material for the next Silvergirl record, I've come back to these recordings. It's been a few years, but I still love these songs and wanted to get them out to Silvergirl fans, both old and new, in their original state. I hope you enjoy them.

-Steve

Track Name: Pot Of Gold
Pot Of Gold

There's a Greyhound bus station
And a pot of gold.
And polite conversation
Making me feel old.
And my father's old suitcase
Is holding all my clothes tonight.

Will is be alright?
Will is be alright?
Oh God, will it be alright
When there's no more shots of Brooklyn in my mind?

I don't like to admit it,
But I know it's true
Every time that I listen
To that Dylan tune.
And this ain't the North Country
But I keep seeing you tonight.

Will is be alright?
Will is be alright?
Oh God, will it be alright
When there's no more shots of Brooklyn in my mind?
Track Name: Orphan Town
Orphan Town

Tell your sister I'll come.
We'll leave tonight
As we lose the light
Of the sun.
Tell your sister I'll come.

Cuz I don't work anymore.
More than able
To handle the table
And drawer.
But I won't work anymore.

Learned to never make a sound
Picking up what I can't put down.
Seasons change,
But the leaves won't touch the ground
In an orphan town.

On the vampire coast
We move faster,
But never capture
The ghost.
On the vampire coast.

There's a hound at my heel.
A silent killer
Won't show me his silver
And steel.
There's a hound at my heel.

Learned to never make a sound
Picking up what I can't put down.
Seasons change,
But the leaves won't touch the ground
In an orphan town.

Oh, Carolina!
Oh, Carolina!
Oh, Carolina here I come.

Tell your sister I'll come.
Track Name: Things We Gave Up
THings We Gave Up

Some say we're made up
Of all the things we gave up.
Well, sticks and bones may break up,
But loves supposed to last.

So I believe what some say
When picture frames get lonely.
I turned the lock so slowly,
So no one else could here.

And when I'm in the streets
You know the fires taking hold.
I've never been so young
And I've never been so bold.

And the skeleton army
that's waiting to attack
Can see I'm getting thin
And they want to take me back.

When joy is in a feeling you know won't last
And pain is in the leaving and never coming back.
When all that I've been taught is all I've known,
Must what is now familiar continue to be home?

I would love to love you,
But there's some things I can't do.
Like break a young heart in two
So no one else can hear.

When joy is in a feeling you know won't last
And pain is in the leaving and never coming back.
When all that I've been taught is all I've known,
Must what is now familiar continue to be home?
Track Name: The Gray Light
The Gray Light

There's a ghost out there
That does not care
If we win or lose
Or chose to move somewhere.

So I won't pack my things
I don't know what to bring.
What's enough to be enough
Without being everything?

So here we stand on garden feet,
We're almost there.
Take my hand into the street,
We're almost there.
As the world falls fast asleep,
We're almost there.
In the gray light we'll finally meet.
We're almost there.

If I leave this place
Will I know your face?
Or will you be in front of me
And all I'll see is empty space.

Even though you move so slow
I can't keep up.
I'm losing touch
But can't let go.

So here we stand on garden feet,
We're almost there.
Take my hand into the street,
We're almost there.
The many strong the many weak,
We're almost there.
In the gray light we'll finally meet.
We're almost there.

I could see it in your eyes
As your summer body moved with mine
And in the gray light I was hypnotized.
We were almost there.
Track Name: Closer To God
Closer To God

Winter night sky, a walk in the road.
All of these footprints filling with snow
Are leading me home,
Back home to you.
But at the top of the stairs
All that waits there
Is one side of the moon.

Cuz not long ago
You were right, right here.
But I couldn't hold
On to you my dear.
Not long ago.
Not long ago.

The very next day is the very next night.
I walk the same path, no footprints in sight.
So If I'm standing up
Then I know what to do.
Cuz it doesn't seem odd
That I feel closer to God
When I drink for two.

Cuz not long ago
You were right, right here.
But I couldn't hold
On to you my dear.
Not long ago.
Not long ago.

You used to fly so high in this town
You said it was haunted, "There's ghosts all around."
I never believed.
Now I know it's true.
Cuz all of these footprints
Belong to you.
Track Name: Hand Of The Ocean
Hand Of The Ocean

Old man at sea
Sailing beneath
Skies full of ancient wandering eyes
That never sleep.

I can't remake you.
I can't remake you now.
I can't remake you.
I can't remake you now.

To port he will steer
With nothing to fear.
Watching horizons jagged lines
Disappear.

I can't remake you.
I can't remake you now.
I can't remake you.
I can't remake you now.

Turn into the hand of the ocean.
Turn into the waves of the sea.
Turn into the hand of the ocean
And follow me.
