Anthony works in the grocery store Savin' his pennies for someday Mama Leone left a note on the door She said, Sonny, move out to the country Workin' too hard can give you A heart attack (ack) You oughta know by now (oughta know) Who needs a house out in Hackensack Is that what you get with your money It seems such a waste of time If that's what it's all about Mama if that's movin' up Then I'm movin' out I'm movin' out Sergeant O'Leary is walkin' the beat At night he becomes a bartender He works at Mister Cacciatore's down On Sullivan Street Across from the medical center He's tradin' in his Chevy for a Cadillac You oughta know by now And if he can't drive With a broken back At least he can polish the fenders It seems such a waste of time If that's what it's all about Mama if that's movin' up Then I'm movin' out I'm movin' out You should never argue with a crazy mind You oughta know by now You can pay Uncle Sam with the overtime Is that all you get for your money If that's what you have in mind If that's what you're all about Good luck movin' up 'Cause I'm moving out I'm moving out I'm moving out

Rocket Man 03:54
ROCKET MAN She packed my bags last night pre-flight Zero hour nine A.M. And I'm gonna be high as a kite by then I miss the earth so much, I miss my wife It's lonely out in space On such a timeless flight And I think it's gonna be a long long time 'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home Oh, no, no, no. I'm a rocket man Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone And I think it's gonna be a long long time 'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home Oh, no, no, no. I'm a rocket man Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids In fact it's cold as hell And there's no one there to raise them if you did And all this science I don't understand It's just my job five days a week A rocket man, a rocket man And I think it's gonna be a long long time 'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home Oh, no, no, no. I'm a rocket man Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone And I think it's gonna be a long long time 'Til touchdown brings me 'round again to find I'm not the man they think I am at home Oh, no, no, no. I'm a rocket man Rocket man burning out his fuse up here alone And I think it's gonna be a long long time And I think it's gonna be a long long time And I think it's gonna be a long long time

about

At the start of the pandemic, I recorded myself singing a series of cover songs and put them on facebook. I called the series "My Kids Are Asleep" because it really was the only time I could pick up my guitar and play. Like most of us back at the start of this, I was oblivious as to how the pandemic was going to affect me and my family. Playing and posting was just something fun to do. I look back at that time and think about how naive I was. Not because I chose to play and post music, but because I didn't anticipate how badly I would be shaken by these past 8 months. I have questioned everything and am left with few answers.

Music is the only thing I haven't questioned. It has been and will continue to be my refuge.

Movin' Out, by Billy Joel was the first song I posted as a part of "My Kids Are asleep". I came up with this arrangement about two years ago when I was noodling around one day. I did not set out to arrange I'm Moving Out. It's not a favorite song of mine. It just happened. I just started singing the lyrics with these chords. Don't ask me! It's those times, when something is handed to you from places unknown, you just lean in. So I did. For the recording I added some keys, synth and a beat to the guitar part. Josh did the rest. His production work really brings this track to life.

Rocket Man, by Elton John and Bernie Taupin came with more purpose. I've always loved this song. It's one of those turn up the dial radio songs that you just start singing along with, but like so many of those "Turn it up!" radio songs, I didn't know half the lyrics. When I sat down and actually looked at them, they hit me.

I miss the earth so much. I miss my wife.
It's lonely out in space
On such a timeless flight.

Mars ain't the kind of place to raise your kids.
In fact it's cold as hell.

Reading them in light of the pandemic, adds new meaning. Great songs should work like that. They should be timeless. Rocket Man is one of those songs.

The original is fantastic, but I wanted to slow it down and showcase Taupin's lyrics. After coming up with a chord structure and vocal lines, Josh added drums and keys. His light touch was increible. Lift off.

Despite a rough year, there is much to be thankful for. Lately I haven't been very good at keeping this in mind. But here, on Mars, I will say that I'm thankful for my wife and for my boys. I am thankful for the ability to pick up my guitar. To sing. To play. To collaborate with a friend hundreds of miles away. To make these songs, written by two icons, my own. And I'm thankful for you, who took time to read and listen.

Peace. Stay safe.
